What a walkaround is looking for in a scrap yard isn’t what it’s looking for on a dirt job — and neither is the service schedule.
The duty cycle never lets up
An excavator on a grapple cycles at full reach all shift, every shift. Hours accumulate far faster than on a job site, and service intervals come due on hours — so a calendar-based schedule is always behind.
Everything is abrasive, and some of it is sharp
Torn steel, rebar ends, and contamination in every pile. Hydraulic hoses, grapple pins, and cylinder rods are the wear items that put a machine down, and they are exactly what a walkaround can catch first.
Hours are the argument
Machines move between operators and between piles all day. The meter is the only honest record of what each one actually did, and tap-in/tap-out puts real hours behind the service schedule instead of whoever remembered to write them down.

Our machines are filthy. Will the crew really do this on a phone?
Every screen has one dominant action sized for gloves, and the whole walkaround is a short list of taps — OK, action required, or N-A. It runs in the browser on the phone already in the operator’s pocket; nothing gets bolted to a machine and nothing new goes in the cab.
Half our fleet is older iron with a dead or swapped hour meter. Does that break it?
No. Hours build from tap-in/tap-out sessions, so utilization and service due dates come from what the machine actually ran — not from the physical meter. Where a meter still works, readings get captured on the inspection and the two stay reconciled.
Operators move between machines all shift. Does that get messy?
That’s the normal case, not the exception. An operator taps in on whatever they’re running and taps out when they’re done, so hours land on the right machine and the per-machine record stays straight even when nobody stayed on one unit all day.
